USA Basketball is still coming to Tempe.
Everyone by now has heard the news reports claiming the deal to bring the new headquarters for USA Basketball to Tempe is currently dead in the water.
In a statement released last month, Arizona State University is no longer working with developer Concord Eastridge, but remains committed to developing a project and must now look for alternative developers to advance the project. USA Basketball Director Jerry Colangelo reaffirmed his commitment to bringing USA Basketball to Arizona, hopefully in Tempe.
Here are my thoughts on the news:
1. When news broke that Concord Eastridge was out of the project, I have to believe other developers were trying to contact ASU to get into this project. This location and facility for USA Basketball, Omni Hotel and conference center with luxury apartments, and office and retail space is one top projects in real estate.
2. ASU President Michael Crow wants this project to elevate ASU’s, and Tempe’s, positions on the world stage. It could also help ASU’s basketball program.
3. Jerry Colangelo is determined to see this project through. I believe Colangelo wants to raise Arizona’s profile, as hosting their headquarters here would grant the state recognition from athletes around the country and across the world.
